The classic ABC sitcom home improvement streaming brought the Taylor brood – an all-American family if ever there was one – into American living rooms for eight seasons between 1991 and 1999. In the show, Tim Allen starred as Tim Taylor, the star of show-within-a-show Tool Time, which he hosted with his deadpan sidekick Al Borland (Richard Karn), who often served as Tim’s straight man. The real show focused mainly on Tim’s family life with his wife Jill (Patricia Richardson) and three sons, Brad (Zachery Ty Bryan), Randy (Jonathan Taylor Thomas), and Mark (Taran Noah Smith), who dealt with life’s bumps with a little help from their wise, sometimes obscure neighbor Wilson (the late Earl Hindman).
The Streaming Rights To Home Improvement Streaming May Be Locked Up
A lawsuit filed by home improvement streaming production company, Wind Dancer Productions, that lasted six years after it was first filed in 2013 may have something to do with why the show didn’t simply migrate to Disney+ after its time on Hulu ended. This lawsuit alleged that Disney had deprived Wind Dancer’s principals of a substantial portion of syndication and distribution profits, of which they were owed a 75 percent share.
Essentially, Disney was accused of underreporting the amount to be divided. THR’s report noted that Wind Dancer also felt it was owed royalties from licensing fees paid to Disney by Hulu. It’s not unreasonable to assume that there remain minor legal issues to be resolved, or that Wind Dancer and Disney may be arguing over how large a slice of the streaming pie they’ll be entitled to once the series finds its new home.
Is Disney+ Ever Going To Show Home Improvement Streaming?
Now that the Wind Dancer lawsuit has been settled, it seems as if home improvement streamingt will soon be added to Disney+’s squeaky-clean, family-friendly lineup. Despite being legally in the clear to pick up the series, Disney+ may face other obstacles. Home Improvement is a two-decade-old show that might have benefited from a cleaner digital conversion than Hulu’s, or Mickey Mouse might be trying out different aspect ratios for its presentation. Earlier this year, when Disney+ launched, many Simpsons fans were up in arms over the aspect ratio they chose for that show, as it effectively deleted a significant portion of the image for all of the earlier seasons, before The Simpsons switched to HD. Following that fiasco, it’s easy to imagine Disney wants to avoid irking Home Improvement’s fans in the future.
